The Surprise of Discovery
This page is for anyone who might like to respond to my work,
in a public sort of way. It is an invitation. Any and all observations are invited and welcome, and I will respond to all of them.
Here I present some issues that my paintings are concerned with. They are matters that go beyond the realm of painting, so that painting per se is not a limitation to this discussion. It is however a focus.
Meaning, or significance:
Significance appears spontaneously, unpremeditated, often unaware of itself while it is being produced. But meaning is always integral to the flow of a particular process. Meaning is entirely dependant on a disciplined process.
The surprise of knowing, or discovery:
This is different in kind from knowledge that has been accumulated. Something known just as it happens, not before it happens, is immediate and all-encompassing. Known only once, from within, as it becomes experience.... this kind of knowledge transcends the past/present/future framework of time.
Quest for balance:
It is harmony... the call and response to and from foreign places. The question and the answer, both. There can be no balance without otherness. Otherness is the key to balance.
Is being aware of the extent of that which is unknown. And respecting it. To percieve significance in what is unorganized and chaotic requires rigorous discipline. To recognize chaos as the ground of all meaning is to court insanity.
What happens exactly, at the places where one entity ends and another begins? To what extent do the borders of an entity determine the nature of that entity? To what extent does intention play a role in the determination of an entity?
